The
Constructive Critique
Small-Group Series of Classes & Private Mentoring
With a lifetime of experience in visual arts, I have much to give in the mentoring of artists who are making work on their own and who would benefit from honest, constructive feedback.
All of my studies, teaching, exhibiting and ongoing studio practice have given me a particular kind of perspective. Talking about art can be very elusive, but it’s important to creative growth. Over the years, I have paid a lot of attention to the use of language in the critique format, with a goal of enabling each artist to open up their visual awareness and thus, approaches in their making.
Embodiment of knowledge through practical skills, awareness, communication, commitment, and individual risk taking, will be addressed in a small cohort of artists. Immersion in meaningful engagement with other creatives, facilitated by a seasoned artist and teacher, can support creative development. Sharing your own gifts and work challenges can underscore the ability to pursue next steps. My aim is to craft an environment that enables you to deepen your practice with increased conviction and joy.
I hold an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston and have taught at all levels but mostly in higher education, as a professor at both Montserrat College of Art and at Salem State University.
The Constructive Critique
The Class
Small group critiques will be held in my private studio for 2 hours per session (with a break at the mid-point)
We will focus on honest, critical dialogue about one another’s art.
These active critique sessions may be supplemented by readings and some short reflective writing exercises.
Costs & Requirements
$600 for a group of 5-6 students
$700 for a group of 3-4 students
A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 students will be enrolled in the cohort group.
A commitment to the full 6 sessions is required.
Payment is required at the second session.
Proof of vaccination is required before the first session.
Tentative Plans
The series of 6 sessions will begin on Friday, March 25 and will continue through April 29.
Sessions will begin at 9am and end at 11am.
Because of possible missed sessions, I will be offering one make-up session on Friday, May 6, or Friday, May 13.
You will bring 2-3 pieces of your art to the first session to present to the group. Think about how you can introduce yourself and your work so we have a basic understanding of you as an artist and your process.
Lastly, if there is another surge, we will pivot to a virtual format, but like most of us, I am hoping that that does not occur.
Private Mentoring
In addition, I am offering one on one mentorship, which can be individualized as in-person time, virtual, or a combination of both. $100 per hour session
